Flagging ‘productivity and resilience’ as one of its nine priorities, the govt in its Budget for 2024-25 on Tuesday made a provision of Rs 1.52 lakh crore for agriculture and allied sector, and enlisted a series of measures focussing on boosting horticultural produce, implementation of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in 400 districts, release of 109 high-yielding and climate-resilient varieties of 32 crops and expanding the footprint of natural farming among one crore farmers in the next two years to sustain growth.
Under DPI, details of six crore farmers and their land will also be brought into the farmer and land registries. The digital crop survey, expected to be taken up from the current kharif season, will help in coming out with more precise crop estimates -aprerequisite for better planning and interventions to help both farmers and consumers, either in deficit or glut situations.
“Large scale clusters for vegetable production will be developed closer to major consumption centres,” said finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman. She spoke about coming out with a strategy to achieve self-sufficiency in pulses and oilseedsthrough strengthening their production, storage and marketing. She also announced a network of ‘nucleus breeding centres’ for Shrimp Broodstocks.
