More than 100 people died in a boat capsizing in the Niger River early Monday morning.
Witnesses told Al Jazeera that the boat was carrying wedding guests who were returning to Kwara state from a ceremony in nearby Niger state in central Nigeria.
Al Jazeera correspondent Ahmed Idris is reporting from Abuja that the boat hit something in the water and then sank.
According to Idris, search and rescue operations have been underway since Monday.
Police are yet to confirm how many people died or how many were on the boat, which was reportedly overloaded.
Similar accidents have occurred in the past in areas near the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers.
